F4F's model is built on Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES): the principle that communities who protect and restore nature should be compensated for the ecological value they create — just as any producer is paid for what they deliver. Farmers receive payment only when they prove results: trees that survived, forests that remained standing, carbon that stayed sequestered. This is not charity. It is a market mechanism that aligns economic self-interest with ecological health.

How We Work
Every program begins with farmers, not blueprints. We work with communities to select species, design systems, and set goals that match local ecology, culture, and economic needs. Research consistently shows that participatory design is the single strongest predictor of long-term adoption — because when farmers help design a program, they own it. In Beed district, farmers chose Drumstick and Custard Apple over our initial species list, and those plots now have a 94% survival rate. Co-design is not just an ethical principle; it is an operational necessity for durable outcomes.
We build tools that serve both farmers and funders. ChutkiAI gives farmers program information and agronomy advisory via our WhatsApp-based chatbot — accessible in local languages, without smartphones or data plans. FieldHQ keeps field operations lean and data-rich, enabling our teams to manage thousands of plots simultaneously. TreeLens uses AI and satellite imagery to count, classify, and geo-tag individual trees across thousands of hectares — work that would take a field team months to do manually. Together, these tools make rigorous impact verification possible at landscape scale, generating the transparent data that carbon buyers and institutional funders require.
Ecological interventions only last when they make economic sense for the people who maintain them. We build diversified income streams — timber, fruits, carbon payments, and ecosystem services — so that sustainability is not an ask but an incentive. Farmers in Project Aranyam earn income from intercrops in years 1–4, fruit trees from year 5, and carbon payments from year 3, ensuring no income gap during the transition period when dropout risk is highest. This multi-stream design means that even if carbon markets fluctuate, farmers have tangible, local reasons to maintain their trees. Aligning farmer prosperity with forest health is the core logic of everything we do.
